Line overview

Studies on the biochemistry and molecular biology of insects and pathogenic fungi are carried out at the Laboratory of Insect Biochemistry. They are of interest to sanitary conditions and agriculture. Our goal is to get further knowledge in the biochemical processes of these organisms for developing new methodologies in the control of plagues.

Insects

Our interest is centered on the composition, structure, metabolism and function of lipids and cuticular pheromones of these insects, cuticular hydrocarbons in triatominae as a useful tool in chemical taxonomy and their role in resistance to pyrethroids. New tools of low environmental impact will be developed for the control of plagues.
Epidemiologically important insects are triatominae (Hemiptera, Reduviidae), vectors of Chagas disease (Triatoma infestans, T. dimidiata, T. sordida and Rhodnius prolixus). Among insects affecting agro-derived products, we will study the pest of stored grain beetles (Tribolium castaneum, Sitophilus oryzae, Rizopertha dominica, Ulomoides dermestoides, Acanthoscelides obtectus).

Entomopathogenic fungi

Cuticle of insects was found to be the new target for their control. Biochemical and biological interactions of entomopathogenic fungi (Beauveria bassiana) and their host will be studied. These studies have been focused on the metabolic pathway on the insect lipid degradation by entomopathogenic fungi.
Insect-fungus interactions and the insect behavior were studied in order to develop an “attraction-infection” trap for controlling sucking bugs. This study was based on entomopathogenic fungi and contact pheromones, and it proved to be successful not only in the laboratory but also in field assays. We are currently studying the effect of bioinsecticide on the insect population dynamics and reduction of infection risk with the parasite.

Phytopathogenic fungi

The presence of toxigenic fungi in wheat and other cereals causes important sanitary and economical problems. The pathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearum produces the wheat ear disease, contaminating cultures and their derivatives with toxins from the trichothecene group, mainly deoxynivalenol (DON) and other derivatives. Also, volatile metabolites of Fusarium sp. were characterized, evidencing their use as taxonomic markers. Novel approaches for the early detection of contamination in mycotoxin-producing fungi in culture, were designed.
